The Inaugural
Council Meeting
in Strasbourg

The Inaugural Council Meeting of the
Federation was held in Strasbourg on
September 21, 1991. Representatives
from 15 European member societies and
a number of observers and guests were
present.
Mr Björk, the President of the
Parliamentary Assembly of the Council
of Europe, opened the meeting. He
underlined the importance of joint efforts
by European countries to be able to
develop and compete effectively in the
future. He also emphasized the interest of
the Council in maintaining contacts with
the new Federation.
The proposed statutes were discussed,
revised and approved - the statutes will
be included in the next Newsletter. After
the formal constitution, an Executive
committee was elected. Professors Ernst
Mutschler as President, Douwe Breimer as
Vice-President, Stig Agurell as Secretary-
General, and Piero Sensi as Treasurer,
and Professors Karoly Nikolics and Paul
Rossignol (members).
The task of the Federation is to
advance research in the pharmaceutical
sciences in Europe through cooperation
between national, regional and other
societies. This will include a European
Congress of Pharmaceutical Sciences and
will contribute towards the recognition
of pharmaceutical sciences and to public
policy. To address these tasks it was
decided to establish several committees.
The Secretariat of the Federation will
be located at and sponsored by the Swedish
Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences in
Stockholm for the coming three years.
