EUFEPS Newsletter, 1995, vol. 4, issue 3
On EUFEPS Progress
Douwe D. Breimer, Professor
EUFEPS President
It is important that EUFEPS’
membership be kept up-to-date as to
what progress the Federation is making.
In 1994 at the Council meeting in
Berlin, the EUFEPS Strategic Plan for
1994–1998 was adopted in which clear
short-term and intermediate to longterm
objectives were defined, as well as
priority activities to reach these. In the
November 1994 issue of our Newsletter,
a summary of this Strategic Plan was
provided. In this President’s Report I will
briefly cover topics that have been high
on the Agenda of the EUFEPS Executive
Committee and which also reflect items
discussed at the latest EUFEPS Council
meeting held in Leuven, September 16,
1995.
Membership
At this moment 22 organisations
originating from 19 countries are members
of EUFEPS. The latest application was
accepted in Leuven, from the “Societe
Française des Sciences et Techniques
Pharmaceutiques (SFSTP)” in Paris,
whereas an applica tion by a Spanish
organisation is pending. Recruit ment of
corporate members is an ongoing process
and there are now 16 in this category. The
pharma ceutical industry is going through
a tremendous pro cess of reorganisaiton
and it is quite difficult to draw their
attention to scientific organisations at this
time. Personal contacts within the industry
are extremely valuable to convince
company executives of the importance of
organisations like EUFEPS. During the
summer of 1995 a first effort was made
to recruit individual members, a new
membership category approved of by the
Council in 1994. At the time this report is
being written, I am pleased to report that
nearly 100 persons have joined EUFEPS
as individual members. As soon as their
number exceeds 100 a representative of
this membership category will be elected
for representation on the EUFEPS Council.
Several individual members are located
outside Europe and it is mostly through
personal contacts with the members of
the Executive Committee of EUFEPS
that they have become convinced that
it is important to support our young and
ambitious European organisation.
Meetings
“It is important to meet” was the Editorial
title that Malcolm Rowland (Vice-
President of EUFEPS) wrote in the March
1995 issue of this Newsletter. I will not
repeat all of what he emphasised, except to
again stress that an essential mechanism
of achieving EUFEPS’ objectives is
through the organisation and sponsorship
of meetings. Strong commitment from our
members is needed to make such meetings
a suc cess. We are now leading up to the
3rd European Congress of Pharmaceutical
Sciences in Edin burgh (September 15–17,
1996), and from the 2nd Announcement,
it can be derived that the programme
committee has put together symposia
on topics that are of high current interest
and relevance in the pharmaceutical
sciences. Very near is the 2nd EU FEPS
Nuremberg Conference (December 8–9,
1995) on “Quality and Interchangeability
of Topical Products for Local Action”. It
is our intention to organise a conference
each year at the beginning of December
in Nurem berg on a highly specialised
topic that should be of great interest to the
pharmaceutical industry as well.
EUFEPS was very recently given
high recognition at the First Central
European Symposium on Pharma ceutical
Technology, held in Bled, Slovenia.
XI
I was there to represent the Federation and
to stress that EUFEPS is very interested to
be associated with such regional initiatives
and activities.
In his Editorial, Malcolm Rowland
has also indicated that EUFEPS is
actively seeking links with other related
European and inter national scientific
organisations. This had led to definitive
plans for meetings jointly orga nised with
EUROTOX and ISSX in 1997. BIO-
International ‘96, organised by FIP and
co-sponsored by EUFEPS and others will
take place in Tokyo, Japan, in April 1996.
Discussions are ongoing with the
American Association of Pharmaceutical
Scientists (AAPS) to see what collaboration
with them is possible in terms of meeting
and course or ganisation, as well as other
activities. I will represent EUFEPS at the
meeting of the AAPS Executive Council in
Miami during their Annual Meeting. On
this occasion further discussions will also
take place with FIP, AAPS and Japanese
representative on the feasibility of jointly
organising the First Millennial World
Congress of Pharmaceutical Sciences in
the year 2000.
Executive Committee’s strong belief
that it is in the interest of it membership
to build up strong links with other
organisations in order to join forces rather
than duplicate activities and meeting.
EUFEPS Working Committees
Two working committees have been
put into place, primarily to advise the
Executive Committee on specific issues
and activities. One is the Committee
on Industrial Relations (CIR), chaired
by Prof. J. Vessman, Astra Hässle,
Mölndal, Sweden, and the other one is the
Committee on Pharmaceutical Policies
(CPP), chaired by Professor H. Blume,
