14. EUFEPS in EU Projects
Since establishing (more than 10 years ago) and running the New Safe Medicines Faster
initiative (NSMF), EUFEPS has, obviously, been in leading and supporting roles and positions
of a number of EU funded projects within the European Commission Framework
Programmes for Research and Technological Development. Current projects stem from the
first and second rounds of calls of the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) Joint Undertaking
(JU), which is a highest-level Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in Europe. Four of them, the
first round of calls ones, are focussing on education and training needs and how to fill them,
not the least in the pharmaceutical industry but also in the regulatory area an academic
world.
EUFEPS is consortium member and represented in the executive committee of the project
on European Modular Education and Training Programme in Safety Sciences for Medicines
(www.safescimet.eu). EUFEPS is leader of the Work Package on new and emerging
education and training needs in safety sciences and sustainability of the new programme.
SafeSciMET develops and delivers a pan-European education and training programme on
drug safety that emphasises integrative and translational aspects, from pre-clinical phases
to clinical ones, lacking largely in today’s educational programmes.
EUFEPS is consortium member and also liaised with the executive board of the project on
New and Harmonised Education and Training in Pharmaceutical Medicine in Europe (www.
pharmatrain.eu). EUFEPS contributes actively to three of its work packages – one on strategy,
one on new member state needs and involvement in the education and training programme,
and one on course quality. PharmaTrain aims at fostering the overall understanding
and competence for successful execution of integrated drug development and life-cycle
management of medicines.
EUFEPS is in the External Advisory Board and Strategic Coordination Board of the European
Medicines Research Training Network project (www.emtrain.eu). EUFEPS participates,
moreover, in the work of two of its teams or working parties. One of them should deliver
outcomes of a “gap analysis”, and the other one has started looking into continuing professional
development (CPD) or life-long learning (LLL) for those in medicines research, development,
processing and usage. EMTRAIN should establish a sustainable, pan-European
platform for education and training, covering the whole life-cycle of medicines research.
EUFEPS is liaised with the project on European Education and Training Programme in
Pharmacovigilance and Pharmacoepidemiology (www.eu2p.eu), through two IMI Cross
Project Task Forces. The first one of them focuses on communication of the IMI Education
and Training, lead by EUFEPS, and the other one is tasked to map out and implement
“Bologna” agreements and European higher education quality criteria for quality in the IMI
Education and Training. Eu2P addresses training needs and offers a range of qualification
level courses (certificate, master and PhD) and allows part or full time study by those in employment
as well as graduate students.
Finally, EUFEPS accepted an advisory role in the project on Drug Disease Model Resources
(www.ddmore.eu). It is a project from the IMI second round of calls.
