EUFEPS Permanent
Secretariat established
On February 20, 1999, the permanent
Secretariat of EUFEPS was officially
opened in the premises of the Swedish
Pharmaceutical Society in Stockholm,
Sweden. Members of the Executive
Committee, as well as of the Board of
the Swedish Pharmaceutical Society/
Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences
attended the inaugural reception and
opening ceremony. The opening was
held in conjunction with the February
Executive Committee Meeting in
Stockholm.
Increased activity
As is well-know to the readers of this
Newsletter, EUFEPS was founded in
1991 in Strasbourg, France, by a number
of national societies and associations
for pharmaceutical sciences in Europe,
one of which is the Swedish Academy of
Pharmaceutical Sciences (SAPS) within
the Swedish Pharmaceutical Society. Since
then, the number of Member Societies of
EUFEPS has grown substantially, and
additional forms of membership have also
been established. Currently, EUFEPS
links 25 Member Societies in 22 European
countries. In addition, there is approx.
480 Individual Members, as well as 25
Corporate Members of EUFEPS.
From the inauguration of EUFEPS,
the Swedish Academy of Pharmaceutical
Sciences have been providing secretarial
assistance for EUFEPS. As the
activities of EUFEPS have increased,
the administrative and managerial
requirements on the Secretariat have
also increased. To meet these needs, a
permanent secretariat has been sought
for, and, in 1997 (?), the EUFEPS
Council accepted an offer by SAPS that
the EUFEPS Secretariat be permanently
established in its premises in Stockholm.
Mutual happiness
Against this background, the EUFEPS
President, Professor Malcolm Rowland,
at the opening ceremony, said that he, on
behalf of EUFEPS, is very pleased that
there is from now on EUFEPS Secretariat
physically established. In addition,
substantial, financial support, for a period
of two years, is provided by the Academy.
Perhaps, this will also challenge other
Member Societies of EUFEPS to increase
their support.
The President of the Swedish
Pharmaceutical Society/Academy of
Pharmaceutical Sciences, Professor Conny
Bogentoft, said that he as well is very
pleased with this solution. International
co-operation and collaboration are of
utmost importance for the development
of new drugs. Without extensive research,
there would not be many new effective
medicines, if any. Also, most of the
medicines produced are developed for
the international market. Collaboration
between national regulatory agencies
is growing, and a European one was
recently created. Drug companies in one
country merge with drug companies
in other countries. In other words,
internationalisation and globalisation
seem to be inevitable, and, in this
perspective, it is a matter of course that the
Swedish Pharmaceutical Society, through
the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences,
firmly supports EUFEPS and its efforts to
advance the pharmaceutical sciences and
innovative drug research in Europe.
Modern facilities
Three suitable, newly and nicely
renovated, rooms have been reserved for
the EUFEPS Secretariat, closely located
in the same building and on the same
floor as the Scientific Secretariat of SAPS.
Current staff
Currently, the Executive Director of
the Swedish Pharmaceutical Society,
Professor Björn Lindeke, is elected
Secretary-General/Treasurer of EUFEPS.
In the EUFEPS Secretariat, three
individuals are heavily involved in the
day-to-day service of EUFEPS. They
are Jenny Hagberg, Hans H. Linden, and
Anita Ljung.
