The New Safe Medicines Faster Award The New Safe Medicines Faster (NSMF) Award, sponsored by Sanofi, was established by EUFEPS in 2002 to, every year, honour an individual scientist – or a team of scientists – for outstanding contributions to innovation and advancement of new methodology or technology, primarily, which has significantly contributed to shorten or make the drug development process more efficient. 11. European Pharmaceutical Scientist Prize The European Pharmaceutical Scientist Prize was created on the occasion of the First PharmSciFair, which took place in 2005 in Nice, France. The Prize is intended to recognise significant contributions by a European researcher in any domain of the pharmaceutical sciences, such as: drug modelling, medicinal chemistry, gene therapy, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, drug metabolism, toxicology, pharmaceutical formulation, drug delivery, pharmaceutical physical chemistry, new in-vitro/in-vivo models, etc., i.e. scientific domains and disciplines relevant for drug discovery, development, processing and usage. The intention is not to recognise a life devoted to science, but rather a discovery, which can be considered as a decisive breakthrough in drug discovery and development. The most prestigious European research centres are invited to nominate one or more candidate(s) in one or more of the above-mentioned domains. These centres are: Karolinska Institute (Sweden), Istituto di Recerche Farmacologiche “Mario Negri” (Italy), Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique (Belgium), FIGON (The Netherlands) and Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (France), as well as the EUFEPS Member Societies and other scientific societies and associations participating in the organisation of the Pharm- SciFair. Laureates Year Laureate 2005 Professor Pierre Potier, Paris, France 2009 Professor Michael Karas, Frankfurt, Germany 2011 Professor Patrick Couvreur, Paris, France A simple biological test (tubulin test) allowing identification and selection of new anti-cancer agents, leading to the development of Navelbine and Taxotere. Outstanding achievements in mass spectrometry, related to the analysis of biomolecules by laserassisted desorption ionization, more specifically known as Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization (MALDI). First biodegradable nanoparticles for human use, representing a real breakthrough in the field of advanced drug delivery, e.g. opening new ways for highly efficient and significantly improved drug administration. 41
