At the time of the foundation of the
European Federation for Pharmaceutical
Sciences (EUFEPS) in Strasbourg in
1991, its Executive Committee and
Council considered the creation of an
internationally well-accepted journal of
high scientific standing to be one of the
Federation’s most important goals. The
first issue of the European Journal of
Pharmaceutical Sciences, which appeared
in March 1993, illustrates that the initial
step toward achieving this objective has
been taken. What, then is the intention
of such a new journal? Certainly it is
not just to publish yet another journal in
addition to the already existing journals,
but rather the ideal of providing a
European platform for the publication of
exciting and outstanding pharmaceutical
scientific results and to facilitate and
exchange information between European
pharmaceutical scientists with colleagues
elsewhere in the world. We would like
to express our sincere gratitude to our
colleagues, Prof. Dr. H.E. Junginger and
Prof. Dr. G.J. Mulder in Leiden for their
willingness to serve as Editors in chief
of the journal. The same applies to all the
members of the editorial board.
Without a doubt, 1993 will be a year in

which the European community will move
more closely together. Hopefully, this will
also hold true for its scientific community
and the first issue of the European Journal
of Pharmaceutical Sciences reflects this
development. The journal will also serve
to underline the Federation’s main aim,
which is to strengthen the pharmaceutical
sciences in Europe, to support innovative
drug research and to promote advanced
pan-European pharmaceutical education.
