Medications: Administration of Intravenous Dobutamine __RN<br />

EQUIPMENT:<br />

Infusion set with needle or needleless adaptor<br />

IV solution, as ordered<br />

Medication<br />

Syringes (appropriate size for meds)<br />

Alcohol wipes<br />

Normal saline<br />

Heparin solution (100u/cc or as prescribed)<br />

IV pole<br />

Infusion pump<br />

Gloves<br />

Puncture-proof container<br />

Impervious trash bag<br />

PROCEDURE:<br />

1. Adhere to Universal Precautions.<br />

2. Explain procedure to patient/caregiver.<br />

3. Position patient for comfort.<br />

4. Take and record vital signs, and repeat as ordered<br />

during infusion of medication.<br />

5. Premedicate patient, if ordered.<br />

6. Assess patency of venous access.<br />

7. Assemble infusion set with medication and initiate<br />

infusion. (See Administration of IV Therapy in the<br />

<strong>Home</strong>, No. 9.01.)<br />

8. Set infusion rate per physician's orders.<br />

9. If irregular heartbeat or palpitation occurs during<br />

infusion, stop the infusion and notify the physician.<br />

10. When infusion is complete, flush venous access<br />

device with normal saline and heparin solution. (See<br />

CVC: Irrigation/Heparinization, No. 9.17) If infusion<br />

continuous (see Changing IV Solution Container<br />

and Tubing, No. 9.03).<br />

11. Discard soiled supplies in appropriate containers.<br />

AFTER CARE:<br />

1. Document in patient's record:<br />

a. Medication administered, dose, time, rate and<br />

route.<br />

b. Type and appearance of venous access site.<br />

c. Patient's response to procedure, side effects<br />

and management.<br />

d. Instructions given to patient/caregiver.<br />

e. Communication with physician.<br />
