Emergency: Blunt Trauma __RN<br />

PURPOSE:<br />

Prevent further injury, swelling and pain.<br />

CONSIDERATIONS:<br />

1. A hemophiliac or person on anticoagulant therapy<br />

who injures him/herself should seek medical<br />

attention immediately.<br />

2. If trauma occurs to the eye area, the patient should<br />

see the physician.<br />

EQUIPMENT:<br />

Cold compresses or ice pack<br />

Gloves – if available<br />

PROCEDURE:<br />

1. Adhere to Universal Precautions.<br />

2. Explain procedure to patient.<br />

3. Inspect affected body part for injuries, i.e.,<br />

abrasions, cuts, fractures, dislocations, swelling.<br />

4. If extremity is affected, elevate above the level of<br />

the heart, if it does not cause more pain.<br />

5. Apply cold compresses or ice pack for 30 minutes.<br />

Do not apply directly on skin.<br />

6. If swelling or pain persists, reapply ice packs<br />

intermittently for comfort, and refer to physician.<br />

7. Discard soiled supplies in appropriate containers.<br />

AFTER CARE:<br />

1. Contact referring physician if other injuries are<br />

suspected or swelling continues to progress past<br />

one-half hour.<br />

2. Contact the nursing supervisor to inform of injury<br />

and then complete a written incident report and<br />

submit to supervisor within 72 hrs.<br />

2. Document in patient's record:<br />

a. Incident and degree of injury.<br />

b. Treatment provided.<br />

c. Patient's response to treatment.<br />
