Pediatrics: <strong>Home</strong> Apnea Monitoring __RN<br />

Follow-up as Necessary:<br />

1. Nursing assessment of infant/child's condition and<br />

the caregiver's capabilities of handling apnea<br />

program.<br />

2. Review signs and symptoms of respiratory<br />

complications or potential problems that should be<br />

reported to physician and/or medical team.<br />

3. Answer any questions concerning aspects of the<br />

infant/child's care. Reinforce previous teachings<br />

and instructions.<br />

4. Review daily care records (flow sheet).<br />

5. Instruct additional caregivers as necessary.<br />

6. Review CPR skills of caregivers.<br />

7. Call physician and/or medical team for periodic<br />

updates.<br />

8. Utilize monitor company as resource and network to<br />

provide consistent educational focus.<br />

AFTER CARE:<br />

1. Document in patient's record:<br />

a. Findings from nursing assessment.<br />

b. Psychological status of home environment,<br />

caregiver's coping mechanisms.<br />

c. Child's skin care status.<br />

d. Apneic/bradycardic spells/actual and<br />

questionable.<br />

e. Any communications with medical team.<br />

f. All instructions (written and verbal) given to<br />

caregivers.<br />

2. Encourage the caregivers to recognize the healthy<br />

aspects of the child. Provide specific guidance to<br />

the caregivers to strengthen the bonding with child.<br />
