Infection Control: Handling of Blood <strong>And</strong> Body Fluid Spill __RN __HHA<br />

PURPOSE:<br />

To protect patients, caregivers, and clinical staff from<br />

exposure to bloodborne and other pathogens resulting<br />

from any spill of blood or body fluids.<br />

CONSIDERATIONS:<br />

1. Spills of blood or body fluid on any surface should<br />

be handled according to this procedure.<br />

2. Disinfectants may be damaging to carpet, fabric,<br />

and other surfaces.<br />

EQUIPMENT:<br />

Disposable spill kit or gloves, 2 pair<br />

Disposable gown or apron<br />

Protective eye wear (optional)<br />

Paper towels or disposable cloths<br />

Plastic bags<br />

Soap (antimicrobial or non-antimicrobial)<br />

Disinfectant (see Appendix A)<br />

PROCEDURE:<br />

1. Adhere to Universal Precautions.<br />

2. Use personal protective equipment (i.e. gloves)<br />

3. Wipe or soak up the material with the absorbent<br />

towels or cloths.<br />

4. Place the towels in the first plastic bag.<br />

5. Clean the area with 1:10 strength (1 part bleach to 9<br />

parts water).<br />

5. Disinfect the area with fresh disinfecting solution.<br />

Place the paper towels or cloths in the first plastic<br />

bag.<br />

6. Remove the outer pair of gloves and place in the<br />

first bag.<br />

7. Securely tie the first bag.<br />

8. Place the first bag in a second bag.<br />

9. Place all protective clothing and equipment in the<br />

second bag removing the inner pair of gloves last<br />

and placing in the second bag.<br />

10. Securely tie the second bag. Place in trash.<br />

11. Decontaminate hands.<br />

AFTER CARE:<br />

1. Use extreme care to prevent contamination to self<br />

by following hand hygiene guidelines.<br />

2. Document in patient's record:<br />

a. Details of spill of blood or body fluids.<br />

b. Method for handling the spill.<br />

3. Report incident to supervisor, as appropriate per<br />

agency policy.<br />
