He is Direc<strong>to</strong>r of the <strong>Forest</strong><strong>Peoples</strong> <strong>Programme</strong>. Marcus has over thirty years’experience working with forest peoples in thehumid tropics. His expertise is in indigenouspeoples, social and political ecology, standardsetting, human rights, environment, developmentland tenure, policy reform and advocacy, FPIC andconflict resolution. Marcus has worked intensivelyon logging, plantations, palm oil, extractiveindustries, dams, colonisation and protected areas.Sophie Chao is French and Chinese. She holds a BAin Chinese and Tibetan studies and a Masters inSocial Anthropology from the University of Oxford.Sophie has worked as a consultant for the Literacyand Non-Formal Education Division at UNESCO(Paris) and is Assistant <strong>to</strong> the Direc<strong>to</strong>r of the <strong>Forest</strong><strong>Peoples</strong> <strong>Programme</strong> (UK). Her areas of research arelegal and human rights, land tenure, responsiblefinance, cus<strong>to</strong>mary law, legal pluralism and palm oilexpansion in South East Asia.Ramy BulanDr. Ramy Bulan is Associate professor of Law at the Faculty of Law,University Malaya where she teaches Equity and Trust (includingAdministration of Estates) and Jurisprudence. Ramy is currently Direc<strong>to</strong>r ofthe University of Malaya Centre of Malaysian Indigenous Studies (CMIS)and has also headed the Centre For Legal Pluralism and Indigenous Law158
