Celastrus orbiculatus<br />

Asian bittersweet CEOR7<br />

Form: Deciduous tw<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g v<strong>in</strong>e up <strong>to</strong> 65 ft (20 m) long. Stems<br />

can measure up <strong>to</strong> 4 <strong>in</strong>. (10 cm) <strong>in</strong> diameter; olive drab with<br />

many raised, whitish lenticels.<br />

Leaves: Alternate, mostly oval, sometimes slightly taper<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>to</strong> petiole, marg<strong>in</strong>s with broadly rounded teeth.<br />

Flowers/fruit: Flowers unisexual (and <strong>plants</strong> dioecious);<br />

bloom <strong>in</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g. Fruits 3-valved capsule; seeds with a fleshy<br />

red aril.<br />

Habitat: Thickets, fence rows, meadows, forest open<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

marg<strong>in</strong>s, and roadsides.<br />

Similar species: Similar <strong>to</strong> American bittersweet (C.<br />

scandens) except leaves are nearly circular.<br />
