Bull thistle CIVU<br />

Form: Biennial herb up <strong>to</strong> 6½ ft (2 m) tall. Erect and bushy;<br />

stem s<strong>to</strong>ut, often branched, and hairy; conspicuously sp<strong>in</strong>y;<br />

w<strong>in</strong>ged <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> decurrent leaf bases.<br />

Leaves: Oblong <strong>to</strong> lanceolate; green with coarse hairs<br />

on upper side, grayish-green with woolly gray hairs on<br />

underside. Long, po<strong>in</strong>ted, yellow sp<strong>in</strong>es extend from <strong>the</strong><br />

leaf blade at midrib and at each lobe. Leaf bases extend<br />

downward on stem form<strong>in</strong>g long prickly w<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

Flowers/fruit: Purple, 1-2 <strong>in</strong>. (2.5-5 cm) <strong>in</strong> diameter, densely<br />

discoid borne s<strong>in</strong>gly at <strong>the</strong> tip of a stem. Fruits are achenes,<br />

light brown, usually with darker streaks,
