The Forest Inven<strong>to</strong>ry and Analysis (FIA) program of <strong>the</strong> U.S. Forest Service<br />

is an ongo<strong>in</strong>g endeavor mandated <strong>by</strong> Congress <strong>to</strong> determ<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> extent,<br />

condition, volume, growth, and depletions of timber on <strong>the</strong> Nation’s forest<br />

land. FIA has responded <strong>to</strong> a grow<strong>in</strong>g demand for o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>formation about<br />

our forests <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g, but not limited <strong>to</strong>, soils, vegetation, down woody<br />

material, and <strong><strong>in</strong>vasive</strong> <strong>plants</strong>. The <strong>in</strong>tent of this <strong>guide</strong> is <strong>to</strong> aid FIA field staff<br />

<strong>in</strong> identify<strong>in</strong>g 44 <strong><strong>in</strong>vasive</strong> plant species <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 24-state Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Research<br />

Station region (Ma<strong>in</strong>e south <strong>to</strong> Delaware west <strong>to</strong> Kansas and <strong>north</strong> <strong>to</strong><br />

North Dakota). However, this <strong>guide</strong> can be used <strong>by</strong> anyone <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong><br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g about <strong>the</strong>se <strong><strong>in</strong>vasive</strong> <strong>plants</strong>. It conta<strong>in</strong>s distribution maps, short<br />

descriptions, space for notes, and numerous pictures of each plant.<br />
