European alder<br />

Alder buckthorn<br />

Form: Unders<strong>to</strong>ry shrub/tree up <strong>to</strong> 23 ft (7 m) tall; often with<br />

multiple stems at <strong>the</strong> base.<br />

Leaves: With several pect<strong>in</strong>ate lateral ve<strong>in</strong>s; marg<strong>in</strong>s mostly<br />

entire (sometimes with some marg<strong>in</strong>al glands); mostly<br />

alternate, 1-3 <strong>in</strong>. (2.5 -7.5 cm) long, usually more than half as<br />

wide as long. Leaves stay green well <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> autumn.<br />

Flowers/fruit: Flowers bisexual, unlike most relatives;<br />

sepals, petals, and stamens 5; pale yellow. Fruit red <strong>to</strong> black<br />

with 2-3 seeds.<br />

Habitat: Wetlands <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g acidic bogs, calcareous fens,<br />

and sedge meadows. Also does well <strong>in</strong> upland habitats. Can<br />

<strong>to</strong>lerate full sun <strong>to</strong> deep shade.<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r dist<strong>in</strong>guish<strong>in</strong>g features/notes: Bark is brown with<br />

silvery, slightly “corky” lenticels that make it resemble<br />

native cherries or plums. Cutt<strong>in</strong>g a branch will expose<br />

yellow sapwood and orange heartwood. Similar <strong>to</strong> Carol<strong>in</strong>a<br />

buckthorn (Rhamnus carol<strong>in</strong>iana) except not as tall. R.<br />

carol<strong>in</strong>iana can get as tall as 39 ft (12 m).<br />

W<strong>in</strong>ter/early spr<strong>in</strong>g ID tip: Buds are naked (common<br />

buckthorn and alderleaf buckthorn have scaly buds).<br />

Carol<strong>in</strong>a buckthorn also has naked buds, but Carol<strong>in</strong>a<br />

buckthorn is taller than glossy buckthorn.<br />
