Form: Scrambl<strong>in</strong>g or climb<strong>in</strong>g v<strong>in</strong>e up <strong>to</strong> 6½ ft (2 m) long.<br />
Stems mostly very slender.<br />
Leaves: Opposite, narrowly <strong>to</strong> broadly ovate; apex longtaper<strong>in</strong>g<br />
or acute.<br />
Flowers/fruit: Few-flowered clusters axillary <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> leaves;<br />
flowers small, 5-petaled, star-shaped; corolla purple <strong>to</strong><br />
purplish-black. Milkweed-like fruits 1½-3 <strong>in</strong>. (4-7 cm) long<br />
and slender, with pubescent seeds.<br />
Habitat: Moist, sunny places <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g woods.<br />
O<strong>the</strong>r dist<strong>in</strong>guish<strong>in</strong>g features/notes: Also known as<br />
V<strong>in</strong>ce<strong>to</strong>xicum nigrum.<br />
Similar species: European or pale swallow-wort<br />
(Cynanchum rossicum) has creamy p<strong>in</strong>k <strong>to</strong> reddish brown<br />
flowers. Its tw<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g habit and opposite, smooth leaves with<br />
somewhat sh<strong>in</strong>y or reflective quality dist<strong>in</strong>guish Cynanchum<br />
louiseae from o<strong>the</strong>r native and <strong>in</strong>troduced species <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
nor<strong>the</strong>astern quarter of <strong>the</strong> U.S. and adjacent Canada.<br />
