Lonicera japonica<br />

Japanese honeysuckle LOJA<br />

Form: Trail<strong>in</strong>g or climb<strong>in</strong>g v<strong>in</strong>e up <strong>to</strong> 80 ft (25 m) long. Young<br />

stems f<strong>in</strong>ely pubescent; older stems reddish-brown and <strong>the</strong><br />

bark sometimes shredd<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Leaves: Opposite, mostly ovate, apex with an abrupt <strong>to</strong>oth<br />

or cusp; marg<strong>in</strong>s entire, but can be lobed <strong>in</strong> early spr<strong>in</strong>g;<br />

undersides appear whitish. Semi-evergreen.<br />

Flowers/fruit: Axillary pairs on a bracted stalk. Flowers white<br />

<strong>to</strong> pale cream. Corolla tube approximately equals <strong>the</strong> lobes.<br />

Blooms <strong>in</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>gtime. Fruit a black berry.<br />

Habitat: Disturbed woods, fields, thickets, and forest edges.<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r dist<strong>in</strong>guish<strong>in</strong>g features/notes: This looks similar <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> native v<strong>in</strong>e Lonicera hirsuta (hairy honeysuckle) when not<br />

<strong>in</strong> flower. However, once L. hirsuta beg<strong>in</strong>s flower<strong>in</strong>g, it forms<br />

dist<strong>in</strong>ctive connate term<strong>in</strong>al leaves. If not <strong>in</strong> flower yet, check<br />

<strong>the</strong> site condition. L. japonica will be found on disturbed<br />

sites. If berries are present, L. hirsuta has red ones.<br />
