Form: Herbaceous plant 1½ -5 ft (0.5-1.5 m) tall.<br />

Leaves: P<strong>in</strong>natifid with narrow lobes (wormwood-like),<br />

sparsely pubescent.<br />

Flowers/fruit: P<strong>in</strong>k-purple flowers <strong>in</strong> thistle-like heads.<br />

Heads discoid but marg<strong>in</strong>al flowers enlarged and with<br />

irregular corollas. Involucral bracts overlapp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> several<br />

layers, upper marg<strong>in</strong>s darkly fr<strong>in</strong>ged, often p<strong>in</strong>kish. Fruits<br />

achenes
