y Bill Maund, Workshop DirectorMATCH DIRECTOR WORKSHOP"Brain trust" doesn't comeclose to describing the characterof the volunteers attendingthe 1997 USPSA Area MatchDirector Workshop. Add conceptslike dedication, commitment, integrity, leadership, andhard work, and the personalityprofile of the eight 1997 AreaChampionship match directorsreally comes into focus. To the shooter who pays anentry fee and shoots the match, the role of match director is apparentand expected, thoughmostly unappreciated. As competitors,we see the match directoras the person chargedwith making us happy, satisfyingall kinds of individual needsand creature comforts, the personto complain to when somethingdoesn't go well and theperson who is personally responsiblefor every detail (makethat problem) that occurs duringthe match. The fact that the Area matchdirector is an unpaid volunteerwho contributes a year of emotion, energy, time, talent, andsupposedly unlimited personalresources appears for the mostpart to be one of the best-keptsecrets of the sport. It became clear to me whilelistening to small talk beforethe workshop officially got underway that the collectivemind, body, and soul of thematch directors assembled forthe workshop is dedicated tocreating a memorable USPSAArea Championship series.ABOUT THE MATCH DIREC-TOR WORKSHOPThe Area Championships, having grown in popularity and1997 USPSA AREA CHAMPIONSHIPSprestige, have become morethan the traditional "big" clubshooting contests desigmed asspecialty attractions from a fewyears ago. The responsibilitiesof Area match directors haveincreased exponentially withthe growing popularity of practicalshooting contests.Today, one in seven USPSAmembers competes in at leastone area championship. Together, the eight Area Championshipsprovide a competitivevenue for some 2500 members, more than three times the numberthat can be accommodatedat both the Open and LimitedNationals. USPSA PresidentAndy Hollar has often statedthat he can see no reason whythe Area Championshipsshould not eclipse the NationalHome of the only FULL-ALITO self-resetting target!4IN• MoirARE YOUI SERIOUS?$810 ett%i LoNtIrlental US. 500 &melt hard steel, bullet proof re5et linkage and a 'Won- guararae,The Clarks, the Nowlins, the Miculeks and John Shaw all maketheir living in the shooting industry.
