slope does make it a bit harderto lower the hammer with thethumb. While I wouldn't mindthe notch being a bit deeper, this might be the nicest set offixed sights I've seen. The sightpicture is about as good as aBo-Mar and the rear sight is almostas snag free as the Novaklow mount on my Commander. The front sight is dovetailedinto the slide and should stayput, unlike the staked one onmy newest Colt. In a real strokeof genius, they have cut therear sight cut to be compatiblewith a Bo-Mar installation. Youhave to mill more metal off, anddrill and tap a hole, but you canconvert the Kimber to a Bo-Marlow mount if you want. Eventhe rear dovetail is the same. The sights were well regulatedfor windage, althoughthey shoot a little low for mewith most loads. I'm used tofixed sights being a lotfurther off, but since Iplan to put a Bo-Maron the pistol, I'm notgoing to bother filingon the front sight. My next concernwas the trigger pull. The Kimber was usable, but not the crispfour pounds that I like.In these days of litigation,we may neveragain see factory gunswith four pound triggers, but a friend didtell me that anotherKimber he handledhad an exceptionaltrigger pull. My Kimbercame in at about5.5 pounds with a fairamount of creep, whichis about what I'vefound on the Smithsemi-autos and theHeckler & Koch USPsI've used. Most, but notall, SIGs have been awee bit better. However, theKimber was certainly betterthan the last few Colts, Parasand Springfields I've handled. After the first range trip, Idecided to detail strip the Kimberand see what was needed toimprove the trigger. I found thehammer to have nicely polishedsquare hooks and that the seartip was not only well finished,it had a proper breakawaystoned as well. The sear's foot, however, had a layer of thematte black oxide that coats therest of the pistol. This is a nicedurable finish, but in my mindit is a bit on the rough side forsears. It was an easy job tocarefully stone it off.In the frame, I found thecuts for the trigger also deeplycoated with the matte black oxidefinish, so I spent a few minutespolishing some of it out ofthe cuts before reassemblingSITZEROANIINAft/001E11 ilifORE!zarwnwitiReliability,Accuracy, and Affordability. I put in a Wilsontrigger and arched mainspringhousing (arched ones fit myhand better) out of personalpreference. The McCormickcomposite trigger is really nice,as is the flat, checkered, compositemainspring housing thatcame with the pistol, but I prefermetal parts. I used the Wolff19-pound mainspring that wasalready in the Wilson housingrather than the heavier 22-pound mainspring a Kimberrep told me they use in theirpistol.I was very pleased with myhalf-hour of work. Only a smallhint of creep remained and thepull had dropped to a pleasingfour pounds. I wouldn't want itany lighter for a defensive gun.The creep is in the takeup portionof the pull, so I probablydidn't completely smooth outthe frame cuts for the trigger.MarchlApril 1997 Page 43
