Anticipatinga response similar tothat of the Limited Championship,I asked Floyd andChuck to join me in the officeonce again to answer telephones, along with DaveTheusen and Paul Bertlin. While there were fewer callsgenerated by the secondmatch, we were definitelykept busy for a couple ofhours that Saturday morning. We took approximately 75calls between 6:30 and 10:00.Another 75 calls came in the followingweek. More than 500 informationpackets have been$149!plus shippingD44, 11,tsent out by the office staffsince the first telecast, andclubs and sections have beennotified about the callers fromtheir areas for follow-up calls. Now, it is very importantthat these people be contactedas the shooting season beginsto warm up. If your club leadershave not had the opportunityto call the respondents inyour area, why not volunteerto help? Longer letters will beprinted only if space allows.• PRODUCTION GUNCATEGORYThe suggested purposes forthe category given in In Touch(October) are fine for a rulebook but fail to express whatnew handgun owners reallywant in a production class. Many of my coworkers andassociates are avid handgun enthusiasts, enjoy discussingpractical shooting and considercompeting but don't for two primaryreasons. One is the belief'(from watching a match) thatyou need specialized equipment(gun and holster) to compete ona level playing field, and thesecond is the cost of the equipment. They would compete in aclass where they could taketheir stock Colt, Glock, Browning, etc., in a carry holster andbe competitive without havingto spend hundreds/thousandson gunsmith fitting of aftermarket parts along with a competitionholster. The real challenge in creatinga production class is to keepit truly "production," where ashooter can go to a local gunshop, buy a quality off-the-shelfhandgun/holster and competewithout being at a serious disadvantage.Allowing modifications towander far from actual "production"will end in a 10-roundLimited class and the beginningshooter will again bepriced out of being competitive—thevery argument for theclass in the first place. For instance, does a highly modifiedsingle-stack 1911 with precisionfit slide/frame, fittedmatch barrel, match trigger/hammer/sear,low mountBo-Mars, high ride beavertail, oversized magazine well andcheckering really have any lessan advantage over a stock 1911(-WHETHER ITS A NEW GUN, SEASON TUNE-UP,OR A REPAIR...‘‘... Ft E ethan a stock Para with pre-ban,hi-cap magazines? Many shooters who wouldlike to compete in a "production"class could not afford tospend several times the cost oftheir gun to have it modified tobe competitive and would feelthey were not competing onlevel ground. This class should be for theshooter with a productiongun/carry holster and not fordisgruntled owners of highlymodified single-stacks who donot want to compete against hi-LETTERS continued on page 63.ilet4P%...YOU CAN COUNTON US FOR THE MAX INCRAFTSMANSHIP AND RELIABILITY!!!KREBS GUNSIMITHING INC.940 Forest Edge DriveVernon Hills, IL 60061Phone 847-821-7763 FAX 847-821-7765Hours: Tues. thru Fri. 10AM - 5PM CST.March/April 1997 Page 3
