Umfleet, TY-25563Because of my job in internationalsales, I found myselfplanning another trip to Asia,traveling through Australia,the Philippines, and Singapore.I thought about trying to scheduleanother international IPSCshoot, but my trip was in lessthan 30 days and that didn'tgive me enough time to get allthe details worked out. Besides,I told myself, I wanted to travelas lightly as possible, and thatmeant leaving my holster, magpouches, belt, and earmuffs athome. No shooting for this trip.At the last minute, I calledUSPSA in Sedro Woolley fromthe airport in LA and asked fora contact name and phone numberof the IPSC section in Australia.I thought to myself thatat least I could contact someonedown under and talk to himabout guns. The contact was inthe Sydney area, so when Ilanded in Sydney, I called fromthe airport. I tried severaltimes, but there was no answer."Good try," I told myself."Maybe next time."Perth, on the western side ofthe country, was my destinationin Australia. I arrived on aSaturday, settled into my hotelroom and thought that I mightbe able to call up a gun shopand buy a Tanfoglio T-shirt (Ilike to collect them). As I wassearching in the Yellow Pagesunder the heading of "Guns", Iwas amazed to find a listing for"Maddington PracticalShooter," and couldn't pass upmaking a call. Hesaid his club was having amatch the next day and that Iwas welcome to borrow his gun.He stated that if I didn't breakhis gun, he wouldn't break myleg. That's an equitable arrangementif I ever heard one!He loaned me his Para-Ordnance.45 and a Hellweg holster.The holster wasn't thecompetition version we see inthe States, it was a "bush" holster.Real Aussies don't use tacticalholsters; they use holstersmade for the outback.The match consisted of fivestages and a minimum of 76rounds.
