Forexample, if one sets four targetsdownrange, one yard apart,each requiring a maximum oftwo rounds to be fired at it(eight rounds total), and a fixedtime allotted of 1.5 seconds (1.8seconds total with the .3 secondbuzzer allowance), this wouldbe a reasonable test, I believe.I don't think a Grand Mastercould "hose" it and get all eighthits.If a rule were made, for instance,that read, (a) "TimedFire courses shall not havemore than .225 seconds pershot time allotment, including.3 second buzzer allowance." (b)"Targets shall not be closer tothe competitor than five yards."This would leave much latitudefor course design and provide agood test of ability for all.As a "B" Open and "C" Limitedshooter, I have not donebetter on average than three orfour hits per run, four to fivehits per run with targets fiveyards downrange. Adjustingpenalties to allay quick misspick-ups would also help.In many respects, Comstockcourses of fire are as much anability to run from one point toanother or change shooting po-sitions quickly, as they areshooting ability. Timed Fireand Virginia Count courses,standards, are more a test ofshooting ability and as such area necessary requirement for oursport.Many rules have been madefor our sport. It is time to revisesome for this part. A .225 secondsper shot time allotment isa good place to start. As in theexample, .225 times 8 equals1.8 seconds for the four target,eight shot course.To eliminate that which wedon't like, and that which is nogood is not always the samething. Many of us may not lickour chops at the thought ofshooting standards; however,that does not mean that standardsdo not have a place in oursport.A well-designed standardthat provides a good test, forthe Grand Master as well as thenovice, is a challenge for all.
