3.6.2 PRESSIn the field of the press, force is to notice that the cultural pages of big national daily newspapers, such asThe Figaro, The Monde, Libération, regularly review in the sector, especially for the live gigs. If certainweeklies are interested in headliners or in musical phenomena connected to the current political and socialevents, they seem to have little impact on the consumption of world music. On the other hand, the realinfluencers in terms of purchase of discs, are the general cultural weeklies, such as Télérama, whosenumber of "keys" can be attributed to mark the quality of a disc is a reference for consumers, and in alesser measure Inrockuptibles.3.6.3 SPECIALIZED PRESSWhile the classical and jazz domain, less endowed in market shares, possess respectively severalspecialized magazines, it seems that no publication is interested in world music. World–music... onlyFrench monthly magazine completely dedicated to this genre and with a national circulation, is faced withdifficulties stabilizing its publication. A specialized monthly magazine, Vibrations, dedicates an importantpart of its pages to world music, alongside jazz, funk, soul and electronic music. Certain press supportsapproach certain specific musical genres with a community point of view. There are notably somespecialized magazines on African music and a monthly magazine dedicated to Celtic music started in May2004.3.6.4 PROMOTIONWorld music was for a long time badly known by promotion services, however today it has a relativelysolid base of structures and of competent specialized publicists. For the most part of them today, the latterwere formed within specialized independent labels. Having grown stronger due to their respectiveexperiences, they often opened their own independent structures. It is the case of BIP, Seasick Fontana,Marianne Lau nay, Claire Extra, Catherine Michel, Pêle-Mêle, Eliane Petit or Salammbô. Independentmusic labels as well as majors have nowhere near enough personnel to work on the promotion of theincreasing releases, therefore they regularly contact well-known people in the media for their competence. Some have specialized themselves, such as Aoura in the field of the Celtic music, Art et Son Productionin Antillean music, or Baba Yaga in Eastern European music, etc. Some structures handle the promotionand the marketing of foreign labels. It is the case of Métisse Music that at the same time as its activities ofmusical publisher, drives in France the productions of the German label Piranha, in distribution at Nightand Day. Generally speaking, when a foreign label negotiates the use of its catalog in France with aspecialized distributor, one must also think of contacting an independent promotion service, in order tohave a good chance of broadcasting productions in the national media.France Export Handbook–World Music
