1. INTRODUCTION<br />

This study is a Master <strong>of</strong> Science <strong>the</strong>sis <strong>in</strong> Regional Studies with a specialization <strong>in</strong><br />

Development Geography. <strong>The</strong> title <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis is: <strong>The</strong> <strong>Significance</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Susta<strong>in</strong>ability</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Charcoal</strong> <strong>Production</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chang<strong>in</strong>g L<strong>and</strong>scape <strong>of</strong> Dakatcha Woodl<strong>and</strong>, SE Kenya. <strong>The</strong><br />

study comprises <strong>of</strong> seven parts: Introduction, Research Compilation, Local sett<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

<strong>The</strong>oretical framework, Results, Discussion <strong>and</strong> Conclusions (<strong>and</strong> Appendices). Figure 1<br />

presents <strong>the</strong> contents <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study.<br />

RESEARCH PROBLEMS<br />

<strong>The</strong> study scrut<strong>in</strong>izes <strong>the</strong> problematics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> human-nature relationship <strong>in</strong> a development<br />

country context draw<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>oretically <strong>and</strong> methodologically from two fields <strong>of</strong> geography:<br />

Development Geography <strong>and</strong> Geo<strong>in</strong>formatics. It analyzes <strong>the</strong> correlation between biodiversity<br />

<strong>and</strong> ecosystem service (ES) loss <strong>and</strong> human actions <strong>and</strong> tries to untangle <strong>the</strong> possibilities for<br />

susta<strong>in</strong>able co-existent <strong>of</strong> both humans <strong>and</strong> nature. <strong>The</strong>se actions are comb<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> one<br />

objective: to contribute <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> plann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able management <strong>of</strong> l<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> forests, <strong>and</strong><br />

susta<strong>in</strong>able livelihoods <strong>in</strong> Dakatcha Woodl<strong>and</strong> area <strong>in</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>ast Kenya. A hardcopy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>sis can be accessed at <strong>the</strong> collection <strong>of</strong> Kumpula Undergraduate Library <strong>of</strong> Science <strong>in</strong><br />

Hels<strong>in</strong>ki, <strong>and</strong> an electric version at <strong>the</strong> E-<strong>The</strong>sis service (http://e<strong>the</strong>sis.hels<strong>in</strong>ki.fi/).<br />

A lot <strong>of</strong> research has been done related to <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>mes that form <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical framework <strong>of</strong><br />

this study: l<strong>and</strong> use <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong> cover change (LULCC) <strong>and</strong> deforestation; forest ecosystem<br />

services <strong>and</strong> vulnerability <strong>of</strong> natural <strong>and</strong> human systems; forest management <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong> tenure<br />

<strong>in</strong> Kenya; susta<strong>in</strong>able l<strong>and</strong> management, development <strong>and</strong> livelihoods; <strong>and</strong> woodfuel energy.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> heart <strong>of</strong> this study <strong>the</strong>re is environment <strong>and</strong> its' change, which affects biodiversity <strong>and</strong><br />

ecosystems, <strong>and</strong> thus ecosystem sercives. Because all human be<strong>in</strong>gs rely upon <strong>the</strong> services <strong>of</strong><br />

ecosystems (Mertz 2005: 5), weakened ecosystem services deteriorate <strong>the</strong> possibilities to have<br />

good liv<strong>in</strong>g conditions <strong>and</strong> livelihoods (MA 2005: 5). Environmental change is caused both<br />
