<strong>The</strong> local population is <strong>in</strong> a key position <strong>in</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able uses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> woodl<strong>and</strong>s: accord<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

Nature Kenya (2008: 3) <strong>the</strong> impacts <strong>of</strong> environmental degradation must become knowledged<br />

enable <strong>the</strong> utilization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> natural resources <strong>in</strong> a susta<strong>in</strong>able way. <strong>The</strong> Master Plan for<br />

Dakatcha Woodl<strong>and</strong> discusses <strong>the</strong> possibilities to develop fur<strong>the</strong>r community livelihood<br />

<strong>in</strong>itiatives <strong>of</strong> which two: bee-keep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> eco-tourism are discussed later (Mbuvi et al. 2011:<br />

40-41, 50) (Table 5). Livelihood <strong>in</strong>itiatives can work as concrete ways to reduce poverty if<br />

factors such as management skills, quality, access to markets, <strong>and</strong> transportation are <strong>in</strong> place<br />

(White & Mustalahti 2005: 93).<br />
