Position <strong>of</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> fish<strong>in</strong>g grounds based on <strong>survey</strong> observations (2004 and 2005); where <strong>the</strong>larger (western) green block <strong>in</strong>dicates <strong>the</strong> Scottish fish<strong>in</strong>g ground; <strong>the</strong> smaller green block <strong>in</strong>dicates <strong>the</strong>French fish<strong>in</strong>g ground; <strong>the</strong> larger black box <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> fish<strong>in</strong>g ground identified dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 2004 <strong>survey</strong>;<strong>the</strong> largest blue box presents <strong>the</strong> <strong>survey</strong> area; and blue dots represent sight<strong>in</strong>g positions <strong>of</strong> commondolph<strong>in</strong>s (regardless <strong>the</strong> effort status).Interaction with fisheriesSight<strong>in</strong>gs with<strong>in</strong> 2 nmiles <strong>of</strong> pelagic trawl fisheries were noted throughout <strong>the</strong> <strong>survey</strong> period. Nosight<strong>in</strong>gs were made dur<strong>in</strong>g dedicated ‘Fisheries Observation’ <strong>survey</strong> modes (FOS or FOF). However,a total <strong>of</strong> 20 fisheries related (<strong>in</strong>cidental) sight<strong>in</strong>gs were recorded compris<strong>in</strong>g a total <strong>of</strong> 78 animals (seeTable 3), amongst <strong>the</strong>se was one common dolph<strong>in</strong> calf. The species <strong>in</strong>volved were common dolph<strong>in</strong>s,bottlenose dolph<strong>in</strong>s and harbour porpoises. In addition, bask<strong>in</strong>g sharks were sighted twice <strong>in</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong>pair trawlers.Interactions between fisheries and <strong>cetacean</strong>s were reported four times, <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g common dolph<strong>in</strong> andunidentified dolph<strong>in</strong>. Interactions <strong>in</strong>cluded bow-rid<strong>in</strong>g a RIB (<strong>in</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> trawlers) and surfac<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nets and <strong>in</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fish<strong>in</strong>g vessels. When <strong>cetacean</strong>s were seen approach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>fish<strong>in</strong>g operations this was also regarded as a possible <strong>in</strong>teraction. The <strong>in</strong>teractions or possible<strong>in</strong>teractions are briefly described below.On <strong>the</strong> 26 th <strong>of</strong> February at 18:38, a group <strong>of</strong> 4 common dolph<strong>in</strong>s were seen from <strong>the</strong> RIB <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity<strong>of</strong> non-operat<strong>in</strong>g trawlers. The dolph<strong>in</strong>s did not <strong>in</strong>teract with <strong>the</strong> RIB and were briefly seen surfac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>vic<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fish<strong>in</strong>g boats.On <strong>the</strong> 9 th <strong>of</strong> March at 13:35, a group <strong>of</strong> 5 common dolph<strong>in</strong>s approached <strong>the</strong> RIB which was stationarybeh<strong>in</strong>d a pair <strong>of</strong> non-operat<strong>in</strong>g trawlers. The dolph<strong>in</strong>s briefly <strong>in</strong>teracted with <strong>the</strong> RIB. The dolph<strong>in</strong>swere seen <strong>in</strong> a tight group formation travell<strong>in</strong>g towards <strong>the</strong> fish<strong>in</strong>g vessels.On <strong>the</strong> 15 th <strong>of</strong> March at 08:13, a group <strong>of</strong> 15 unidentified dolph<strong>in</strong>s were seen <strong>in</strong> a loose groupformation <strong>in</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> trawlers which was sett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> net (i.e. half way through <strong>the</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>gprocedure). The dolph<strong>in</strong>s were <strong>the</strong>n seen mov<strong>in</strong>g towards <strong>the</strong> fish<strong>in</strong>g vessel. By <strong>the</strong> time <strong>the</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>g hadf<strong>in</strong>ished, <strong>the</strong> dolph<strong>in</strong>s had disappeared from <strong>the</strong> area.20
