GROSS POSTMORTEMExternal exam<strong>in</strong>ationNutritional state: Good.Body orifices: The left eye was <strong>in</strong>tact, but <strong>the</strong> right had been pecked open.Ectoparasites: None found.F<strong>in</strong>s and flukes: Several v-shaped notches were found on <strong>the</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g and trail<strong>in</strong>g edges <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> right tailfluke and a s<strong>in</strong>gle v-shaped notch was found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> trail<strong>in</strong>g edge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dorsal f<strong>in</strong>. Some sk<strong>in</strong> loss and slightredden<strong>in</strong>g was noted on both <strong>the</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g and trail<strong>in</strong>g edges <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dorsal f<strong>in</strong>. A 2-3cm wide strip wasmiss<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> trail<strong>in</strong>g edge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> left pectoral f<strong>in</strong>, leav<strong>in</strong>g a clean but irregular shaped edge. Several sets<strong>of</strong> th<strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>ear impressions were also found on <strong>the</strong> dorsal aspect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> left pectoral f<strong>in</strong>; <strong>the</strong>re seemed to betwo dist<strong>in</strong>ct groups, both appear<strong>in</strong>g to ‘fan out’ from a po<strong>in</strong>t on <strong>the</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g edge. Each l<strong>in</strong>ear impressionconsisted <strong>of</strong> two th<strong>in</strong> parallel marks that were 2mm apart and less than 1mm <strong>in</strong> diameter <strong>the</strong>mselves. Most<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> right pectoral f<strong>in</strong> had been cleanly excised and some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> surround<strong>in</strong>g epidermis had been lost.Comments:This adult male common dolph<strong>in</strong> was <strong>in</strong> good nutritional condition at death and was found float<strong>in</strong>g at seaby <strong>the</strong> Greenpeace ship MV Esperanza and subsequently frozen prior to post mortem exam<strong>in</strong>ation. Anumber <strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs consistent with entanglement <strong>in</strong> fish<strong>in</strong>g gear (by-catch) were found on post-mortemexam<strong>in</strong>ation. These <strong>in</strong>cluded cutaneous netmarks, haemorrhage <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> thoracic rete mirabile and evidence<strong>of</strong> recently <strong>in</strong>gested prey. It was not possible to ascerta<strong>in</strong> which type <strong>of</strong> fish<strong>in</strong>g activity may have led to <strong>the</strong>animal’s death.
