GROSS POSTMORTEMExternal exam<strong>in</strong>ationNutritional state: Good.Body orifices: The eyes were present. The left dorsal eyelid appeared to have been pecked by scavengers.There was a (approx. 1metre) long longitud<strong>in</strong>al slit <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ventral body wall (knife <strong>in</strong>jury?) extend<strong>in</strong>g from<strong>the</strong> genital slit to just caudal to <strong>the</strong> ribs. The abdom<strong>in</strong>al cavity was exposed and some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> abdom<strong>in</strong>alviscera were miss<strong>in</strong>g. A section <strong>of</strong> approximately 7-8 adjacent teeth <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> right lower dental arcade werebroken <strong>of</strong>f at <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> g<strong>in</strong>giva. Several additional teeth were miss<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> right caudal upperand lower arcades.Ectoparasites: None.F<strong>in</strong>s and flukes: Three parallel and short l<strong>in</strong>ear cuts were located on <strong>the</strong> anterior <strong>in</strong>sertion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leftpectoral f<strong>in</strong>. These lesions were consistent with mon<strong>of</strong>ilament gillnet (tested by apply<strong>in</strong>g a section <strong>of</strong>gillnet to <strong>the</strong> lesions). There were two fresh and slightly jagged tears on <strong>the</strong> trail<strong>in</strong>g edge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> left tailfluke (one was still bleed<strong>in</strong>g). A similar tear was noted on <strong>the</strong> trail<strong>in</strong>g edge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dorsal f<strong>in</strong>. A section <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> trail<strong>in</strong>g edge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> right pectoral f<strong>in</strong> was also miss<strong>in</strong>g, possibly hav<strong>in</strong>g been cut away.Comments:This adult female common dolph<strong>in</strong> was <strong>in</strong> good nutritive condition at death. A number <strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gsconsistent with entanglement <strong>in</strong> fish<strong>in</strong>g gear (by-catch) were found on postmortem exam<strong>in</strong>ation. These<strong>in</strong>cluded a long and deep <strong>in</strong>cision with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ventral body wall, submandibular and thoracic retialcontusions and recently <strong>in</strong>gested prey. No evidence to support an alternative cause <strong>of</strong> death was found. Anumber <strong>of</strong> external lesions were consistent with entanglement on mon<strong>of</strong>ilament gillnet-type fish<strong>in</strong>g gear,<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g suspected net marks on <strong>the</strong> left pectoral f<strong>in</strong> and left body wall, and fresh jagged tears <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>trail<strong>in</strong>g edge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dorsal f<strong>in</strong> and left tail fluke.This report is based on gross f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs and may be modified after <strong>the</strong> laboratory f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs are known.Laboratory results pend<strong>in</strong>g: none.Paul JepsonLondon, 19/05/05.40
