2. TEACHING FOR UMUCThe following rubric summarizes grading criteria in the Graduate School:GRADE INTERPRETATION QUALITY POINTSA Excellent (exceeds standards) 4B Good (meets standards) 3C Below standards 2F Failure—Performance does not meet minimum requirements 0P Passing 0S Satisfactory 02.7.5 Additional MarksUMUC employs an additional set of grades and marks to indicate special circumstances. These include thegrade of FN, which denotes failure to attend a course; the mark of G, which denotes a pending grade; the markof I, which indicates that coursework is incomplete; and the mark of W, which is indicates that the student hasopted to withdraw from a course. A more detailed explanation follows. Faculty members who are unsure of theapplication of any grade or mark should consult with their academic administrator.FAILURE FOR NONATTENDANCE: THE GRADE OF FNMost commonly applied is the grade of FN, indicating failure in the course because the student has ceased attendingor participating in course assignments and activities during the fi rst 60 percent of the session. It is assignedwhen the student ceases to attend class but has not offi cially withdrawn. Additional details and requirements onapplying the grade of FN are provided in UMUC Policy 205.06 Calculation of Grade Point Average for Inclusion onTranscripts and Transcript Requests at http://www.umuc.edu/policy/academic/aa20506.shtml.INCOMPLETE: THE MARK OF IThe mark of I (incomplete) is an exceptional mark given only to students whose work in a course has been satisfactorybut who, for reasons beyond their control, have been unable to complete all the requirements of a course.A very specifi c set of criteria constrain the use of the mark of Incomplete. Faculty members should familiarizethemselves with UMUC Policy 170.71 Policy on Grade of Incomplete and Withdrawal, available online athttp://www.umuc.edu/policy/academic/aa17071.shtml.WITHDRAWAL: THE MARK OF WFaculty members should consult their class roster in MyUMUC on a regular basis to monitor students who mayhave withdrawn from a course. The MyUMUC roster will always be the most up-to-date list; the class list appearingin a WebTycho classroom is likely to be outdated. Instructions on how to access the MyUMUC class roster areavailable at http://www.umuc.edu/faculty/services/classroster.shtml.January 2011 www.asia.umuc.edu 10
