3. TEACHING ASSIGNMENTSTeaching assignments each session are based on the academic and scheduling needs of UMUC Asia and thecourse needs of UMUC Asia students. The UMUC Asia Regional Manager’s Office tries to notify faculty membersabout the courses they will be assigned to teach as far in advance as possible. However, course schedulesand staffing can change. Therefore, a faculty member’s expected course may be rescheduled, canceled, or assignedto another faculty member (possibly at short notice) before the start of classes. It is the faculty member’sresponsibility to maintain close contact with the regional manager concerning the status of assigned coursesbefore the start of classes. It is also the faculty member’s responsibility to let the regional manager know howto contact him or her during this time. If the faculty member is scheduled to relocate for a new assignment, heor she must also contact the Office of Logistics at least 30 days before relocating to be sure that circumstanceshave not changed. If an adjunct faculty member’s assigned course is canceled or assigned to another faculty member before thestart of the class, that faculty member’s course assignment will be terminated.3.1 Geographic Teaching AreasCollegiate faculty members may be reassigned to and within the geographic areas served by UMUC Asia.Reassignments can occur if the educational services required by the government have been reduced, the facultymember’s assigned courses have been eliminated, forces at an installation in the geographical area in which thefaculty member has been appointed to teach have been reduced or moved, or the level of services provided tothe government materially declines during the term of the appointment. If the appointment document indicates that a faculty member may be assigned to all areas served by UMUCAsia, it is very possible that he or she will not remain at one education center for more than one session ofclasses. It is the responsibility of the faculty member to work with the regional manager’s office and the Officeof Logistics to make arrangements for relocation.Collegiate faculty members who are subject to relocation at any time during an academic year are known ascollegiate traveling faculty. Collegiate faculty members who typically teach in one geographic location (e.g.,Okinawa or Korea) are known as collegiate residential faculty. Based on the needs of the program, somecollegiate residential faculty members may be asked to relocate for temporary teaching assignments withina geographic region. Most adjunct faculty do not move from location to location; they teach when courses for which they are qualifiedare offered at installations near their homes or places of employment.3.2 WorkloadIn addition to teaching within the term dates, performing certain activities related to teaching their course(s)before or after the term dates is required of faculty. Examples of such related duties include modifying, submitting, and posting syllabi; collecting or returning teaching materials; creating makeup exams; and submittinggrades and student attendance. Faculty assignments include these activities, and they are a required part of afaculty assignment. There is no additional compensation for these activities.3.2.1 Collegiate FacultyThe standard instructional load for full-time collegiate faculty who are appointed by UMUC Asia with a12-month service period is 27 credits per academic year. The standard instructional load for full-time collegiatefaculty appointed by UMUC Asia with a 10-month service period is 24 credits during the term of the contract.UMUC Policy 181.20 Faculty Workload (http://www.umuc.edu/policy/faculty/fac18120.shtml) provides completeinformation.January 2011 www.asia.umuc.edu 30
