FACULTY RECOGNITION ANDCONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT6.1 <strong>Faculty</strong> Development Workshop ProgramThroughout the year, the Center for Teaching and Learning <strong>of</strong>fers faculty worldwide a comprehensive selection<strong>of</strong> workshops (http://www.umuc.edu/distance/odell/ctla/workshops.shtml), focusing on a wide range <strong>of</strong> topics—such as online and hybrid course pedagogy, discipline-specific teaching strategies, university policies, teachingwith multimedia, instructional design, assessment, and feedback skills. All workshops are free, open to UMUCfaculty members, and facilitated by UMUC faculty or staff. Workshop opportunities are described online athttp://www.umuc.edu/distance/odell/ctla/WorkshopSelectionGuide.pdf.6.2 Awards for Teaching ExcellenceEach year, UMUC recognizes the highest teaching accomplishments by bestowing the Stanley J. Drazek TeachingExcellence Award to outstanding faculty members in the United States, Europe, and <strong>Asia</strong>. Another award—the UMUC Teaching Recognition Award—is also given to other exceptional faculty members with notableteaching achievements. These awards are all initiated by student nominations.The awards’ objectives are to■■■■Emphasize UMUC’s commitment to high-quality adult education.Recognize faculty members who consistently show exceptional skill in promoting student learning andproviding a quality education to UMUC’s adult learners.Encourage students to recognize and reward teaching excellence.Identify a pool <strong>of</strong> talented, dedicated faculty members who can serve as faculty mentors and support otherfaculty development initiatives.6.3 Support for <strong>Faculty</strong> Research and Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Development<strong>Faculty</strong> members need to attend conferences, workshops, seminars, and other pr<strong>of</strong>essional events to stay abreast<strong>of</strong> new developments in their fields. To encourage faculty to engage in such pr<strong>of</strong>essional development, UMUCsupplies limited financial support through a variety <strong>of</strong> means.For stateside faculty, <strong>Faculty</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Development Grants provide small grants to help enable facultymembers who are delivering a paper or presentation at a pr<strong>of</strong>essional conference to attend the event. Supportcan only be provided if prior written consent is obtained and all procedures are followed. Details are providedat http://www.umuc.edu/facdev. <strong>Faculty</strong> members should also contact their academic administrator for additionalinformation about other resources available for pr<strong>of</strong>essional development.UMUC Europe and UMUC <strong>Asia</strong> also <strong>of</strong>fer faculty travel grant programs for the purpose <strong>of</strong> supporting pr<strong>of</strong>essionaltravel. Awards are typically provided for faculty scheduled to present at a pr<strong>of</strong>essional meeting or conferenceor participate in a significant way. Details <strong>of</strong> the travel grant program are available in Section II.4.13 <strong>of</strong> theUMUC Europe and UMUC <strong>Asia</strong> faculty handbooks.Intellectual exchange and faculty research interests are further supported by the Working Papers Web page (http://chaucer.umuc.edu/wp/), where faculty can submit their works in progress to their colleagues for feedback.For completed projects, the Provost’s Office sponsors a yearly award for Best Paper in Online Education Research(http://www.umuc.edu/distance/odell/ctla/provosts_award.shtml).Lastly, the Orkand Chair for Management and Technology sponsors lectures by visiting speakers. The series featuresinternationally acclaimed speakers in the fields <strong>of</strong> management, technology, or education who discuss trendsand advancements in these areas.
