WORLDWIDE ACADEMIC SUPPORTSERVICES AND RESOURCES7.4 Offices Providing Academic Support ServicesAcademic support at UMUC also comprises a number <strong>of</strong> “behind-the-scenes” functions that benefit faculty andstudents. <strong>Faculty</strong> members not only receive the support they need to teach effectively and with satisfaction—they can also rest easy knowing that their students are well provided for by UMUC, allowing faculty to focus ontheir teaching.7.4.1 Instructional Services and SupportThe Office <strong>of</strong> Instructional Services and Support (http://www.umuc.edu/oiss/oiss.shtml) provides and promotesactivities that support UMUC in delivering the finest quality higher education to adult, part-time studentsthroughout the world. This <strong>of</strong>fice comprises three units:■■■Center for Support <strong>of</strong> InstructionCourse DevelopmentCenter for Teaching and LearningCollectively, these units support the university’s various faculty and program needs through the design, development,and maintenance <strong>of</strong> online courses that are enhanced with rigorous academic content, sophisticated tools,and innovative technologies.The Center for Support <strong>of</strong> Instruction works with faculty and academic administrators in adopting, integrating,and using online teaching tools, strategies, and best practices with a focus on supporting growth and quality.The center’s instructional support specialists use their expertise in training/instruction, multimedia/object development,Web design, technical support, and educational technology to work directly with faculty members orhelp guide them to other resources. The center also collaborates with many other units at UMUC to find scalableand effective solutions for various program and faculty requirements. It publishes the DE Oracle @ UMUC(http://www.deoracle.org), a bimonthly e-zine for faculty that includes helpful articles, self-paced tutorials, tips,and links related to online education at UMUC. <strong>Faculty</strong> members can find more information about the Centerfor Support <strong>of</strong> Instruction or request its services at http://www.umuc.edu/departments/csi.Course Development provides systematic yet flexible methods for designing scalable online courses and learningobjects for students worldwide. The staff accomplishes this objective through a team-based, collaborativeapproach. Each team (which includes faculty members selected by the pertinent academic department) is ledby an instructional designer, who works closely with faculty and administrators to assess the needs <strong>of</strong> individualacademic units. The instructional designer uses the latest learning and instructional theories—grounded inresearch in psychology, sociology, and education—to create the optimal learning environment for students whoare studying a variety <strong>of</strong> subjects. <strong>Faculty</strong> members should contact their academic administrator for more informationabout Course Development services.The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is dedicated to promoting teaching excellence and enhancingteaching effectiveness to maximize the quality <strong>of</strong> teaching and learning at UMUC. Its many faculty developmentservices, all <strong>of</strong>fered to UMUC faculty at no cost, include CTLA 201, the initial training course in onlineteaching that is required <strong>of</strong> all faculty who intend to teach online for UMUC. Throughout the year, CTL <strong>of</strong>fersnew and seasoned faculty worldwide a comprehensive selection <strong>of</strong> workshops. CTL also administers the PeerMentoring Program, which matches those who are new to online teaching at UMUC with a peer mentor.
