FINANCIAL AND HUMAN RESOURCEINFORMATION4.5 TaxesAt the time <strong>of</strong> faculty appointment and thereafter upon request, a representative from the Office <strong>of</strong> HumanResources is available to discuss any taxes or tax exemptions that may be applicable. Many UMUC <strong>Asia</strong> facultymembers qualify for the foreign earned income exclusion and exclude some or all <strong>of</strong> their income from U.S.federal taxation. However, each faculty member is responsible for understanding his or her own situation relatingto taxes. To contact a Human Resources representative, faculty members should e-mail ohr-faculty@asia.umuc.edu. If a faculty member is eligible for the exclusion and an exemption from taxes is elected, he or shemust complete a new W-4 each year.4.6 Currency AdjustmentFor collegiate faculty in <strong>Asia</strong> (depending on where they are living), UMUC <strong>Asia</strong> may provide a currency adjustmentto partially <strong>of</strong>fset the effect <strong>of</strong> the devaluation <strong>of</strong> the U.S. dollar and more equitably compensate collegiatefaculty assigned to higher cost areas. Information on the availability <strong>of</strong> the currency adjustment and how it iscomputed is available at http://intranet.asia.umuc.edu/hr/.4.7 Health InsuranceUMUC <strong>Asia</strong> collegiate faculty members are generally eligible for health insurance and other benefits. Thesebenefit plans are described in the current UMUC <strong>Asia</strong> benefits packet. <strong>Faculty</strong> members eligible for coverageare urged to study the benefit plans carefully and select the benefits coverage that meets their individual needs.New employees are given an initial window during which they may enroll in the benefits <strong>of</strong>fered, and openenrollment occurs at least annually. <strong>Faculty</strong> members may request a copy <strong>of</strong> the current benefits packet from theOffice <strong>of</strong> Human Resources at ohr-benefits@asia.umuc.edu.4.8 Tuition RemissionTuition remission may be available for collegiate faculty, staff, and their families, within set limitations.The UMUC Overseas Human Resource Policy Manual (http://intranet.asia.umuc.edu/HR/hr/UMUCOverseasHRPolicyManualJuly2010.pdf) governs the administration <strong>of</strong> this benefit.4.9 Annual LeaveUSM Policy II-2.40 Policy on Annual Leave for <strong>Faculty</strong> does not apply to UMUC <strong>Asia</strong> faculty. However,UMUC <strong>Asia</strong> collegiate faculty may have time <strong>of</strong>f between sessions when they are teaching on-site classes.4.10 Sick LeaveUSM Policy II-2.30 Policy on Accident Leave and Creditable and Noncreditable Sick Leave for <strong>Faculty</strong>Members (http://www.usmd.edu/regents/bylaws/SectionII/II230.html) governs the accrual and use <strong>of</strong> sick leavefor collegiate faculty.Unused accrued sick leave will not be paid upon separation from the university nor will it be restored uponreappointment with UMUC if reappointment occurs three or more years after the effective date <strong>of</strong> separation.4.11 Transfer <strong>of</strong> Overseas EmployeesUMUC Policy 100.10 Transfer <strong>of</strong> Overseas Employees (http://www.umuc.edu/policy/hr/hr10010.shtml) governsthe transfer <strong>of</strong> UMUC <strong>Asia</strong> and UMUC Europe staff and faculty to positions with UMUC Stateside.4.12 Financial Support for Pr<strong>of</strong>essional DevelopmentUMUC is committed to promoting the pr<strong>of</strong>essional development <strong>of</strong> all UMUC <strong>Asia</strong> faculty members, with thegoal <strong>of</strong> improving the quality <strong>of</strong> teaching in the online and on-site classroom.
