Constrained independents are groups that voluntarily affiliatethemselves to another organisation, such as a local environmental group deciding to identifythemselves with the Friends of the Earth network. In doing so, they gain an identity and supportfrom the parent organisation, but the group itself makes decisions about its activities and methodsof working, within the constraints imposed by the parent organisation. Autonomous sub-groups aregroups formed within a community organisation (such as a faith group) but which are not affiliatedto the parent. They retain an identity inherited from the parent body. Mapping the Big Green Challenge 27Many of the applicant groups have formed partnerships, but in most cases the analysis has beenbased on the applicant group as the lead organisation in the partnership. In some cases, thepartnerships have been described as having equal status, and it has not been possible to classifythese in the same way. Some groupshave included their supporters as well as formal ‘members’ leading to anomalies such as a web siterun by a small number of people concluding their group size is 80+ because they have this number offriends in their online social network.
