7 Price analysis of mungbean in ChinaThe mungbean price varies across regions andseasons, driven by market power. Prices are highestin the eastern regions, followed by the centraland western regions. Periodically, the price has apeak in June and July and will decrease to its lowestpoint in October, then increase again. In themiddle of August, after harvest, the mungbean pricewill usually go down by approximately 20% comparedto the price in July. This downward trend willcontinue (usually about 20% again) in Septemberdue to the new harvest selling on the market. InOctober, the price will attain the lowest level, usually5% less than during the previous month, becausethe newly produced mungbean surges in themarket. After that, the price will take an upwardtrend again, due to the decreased supply, at a rateof 5 to 10% per month. The biggest variation inprices occurs during the months of October andNovember, as a result of the large quantities tradedin this period, and the variation in this period willhave an important impact on the price level in theperiod of January to July of the following year.7.1 The trend of mungbean pricechanges in 1986–2000The national average market price of mungbeanincreased steadily from 1986 to 1997. It decreasedin 1998–99 and then went up again in 2000, asshown in Fig. 10. There were two major driving forcesfor the downward turn in 1998 and 1999: 1) the decreasein world market prices, and 2) a decreasein the quality of mungbean due to bad weather.
