Statewide Overview of Motor Vehicle TheftNew York State has experienced a sustained reduction in the number of reportedstolen vehicles — from 79,740 in 1997 to 21,763 in 2009 (a 72.7% decrease). Thisreduction in New York far exceeds the national reduction of 41.3% in reported motorvehicle thefts between 1997 and 2009. The number of vehicles reported stolen in NewYork is now at its lowest level in more than two decades.The following overview on theincidence of motor vehicle theft in NewYork State will be done in a regionalperspective 2 . In 2009, the greatestnumber of motor vehicle theftsoccurred in the Greater New York CityRegion, with its 10,694 reported theftsaccounting for 49% of state total.Rounding out the top five regions in thestate are NYC Suburban Region 4,244(20%), Western Region 2,396 (11%),Finger Lakes Region 1,550 (7%), andthe Capital District Region 938 (4%).
