Dimensions <strong>of</strong> Motor Vehicle Theft in <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> <strong>State</strong>National OverviewAccording to national statistics the number <strong>of</strong> motor vehicle thefts reported in2009 had decreased by 17.1% over the prior year. There were 794,616 motor vehiclethefts reported in 2009 as compared to 958,629 in 2008; all regions <strong>of</strong> the countryexperienced a decrease in motor vehicle thefts.Midwestern states showed a decrease <strong>of</strong> 18.4%, the Southern states a decrease<strong>of</strong> 16.9% and the Western states a decrease <strong>of</strong> 16.7%. The Northeast Region <strong>of</strong> theUnited <strong>State</strong>s experienced a 17.1% decrease in motor vehicle thefts in 2009. In theNortheast region, only <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> and Pennsylvania have dedicated funds administeredby a board or authority for the prevention <strong>of</strong> motor vehicle theft and insurance fraud.FBI statistics showed that California had the greatest number <strong>of</strong> thefts - 164,021or 21% <strong>of</strong> the national total - followed by Texas (76,559), Florida (50,259), Georgia(33,145) and Michigan (29,383).
