provide forged titles to match the false vehicles identifiers. This investigation alsoidentified targets that were exporting a large number of these vehicles to Albania,Russia and Iceland. The takedown of this case resulted in the arrest of nineindividuals, the recovery of 43 stolen vehicles (with an estimated value of $1.5million). All subjects were charged in the Southern District of New York withconspiracy to export stolen vehicles along with the interstate trafficking of stolenvehicles.On April 27, 2009 members of the Auto Crime Division initiated the takedown ofCase #08-041 Operation “Lockbox,” which resulted in the arrest of eightindividuals, the execution of two search warrants, the overall recovery of 16stolen autos (valued at approximately $500,000) and a total of six searchwarrants during the case. The Queens County District Attorney’s Office isprosecuting the case.On October 7, 2009, members of the Auto Crime Division closed Case #08-184,which was a 12-month investigation focusing on the thefts of high-end vehiclesfrom valet locations within Queens. During this investigation, 13 individuals werearrested, four search warrants were executed and 19 vehicles (valued atapproximately $1.5 million) were recovered. The following is asummary of activities for 2009.Manhattan North Auto Larceny UnitThe Manhattan North Auto Larceny Unit operates within the confines of PatrolBorough Manhattan North, which covers upper Manhattan, 59 th Street to the Bronx, andthe Hudson River to the East River. The unit has one lieutenant, one sergeant, andthree police officers. These officers patrol designated precincts where auto relatedcrimes are the most prevalent, using unmarked vehicles and utilizing a License PlateReader assigned to one vehicle.
