This investigation alsoidentified targets that were exporting a large number <strong>of</strong> these vehicles to Albania,Russia and Iceland. The takedown <strong>of</strong> this case resulted in the arrest <strong>of</strong> nineindividuals, the recovery <strong>of</strong> 43 stolen vehicles (with an estimated value <strong>of</strong> $1.5million). All subjects were charged in the Southern District <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> withconspiracy to export stolen vehicles along with the interstate trafficking <strong>of</strong> stolenvehicles.On April 27, 2009 members <strong>of</strong> the Auto Crime <strong>Division</strong> initiated the takedown <strong>of</strong>Case #08-041 Operation “Lockbox,” which resulted in the arrest <strong>of</strong> eightindividuals, the execution <strong>of</strong> two search warrants, the overall recovery <strong>of</strong> 16stolen autos (valued at approximately $500,000) and a total <strong>of</strong> six searchwarrants during the case. The Queens County District Attorney’s Office isprosecuting the case.On October 7, 2009, members <strong>of</strong> the Auto Crime <strong>Division</strong> closed Case #08-184,which was a 12-month investigation focusing on the thefts <strong>of</strong> high-end vehiclesfrom valet locations within Queens. During this investigation, 13 individuals werearrested, four search warrants were executed and 19 vehicles (valued atapproximately $1.5 million) were recovered. The following is asummary <strong>of</strong> activities for 2009.Manhattan North Auto Larceny UnitThe Manhattan North Auto Larceny Unit operates within the confines <strong>of</strong> PatrolBorough Manhattan North, which covers upper Manhattan, 59 th Street to the Bronx, andthe Hudson River to the East River. The unit has one lieutenant, one sergeant, andthree police <strong>of</strong>ficers. These <strong>of</strong>ficers patrol designated precincts where auto relatedcrimes are the most prevalent, using unmarked vehicles and utilizing a License PlateReader assigned to one vehicle.
