With stress<strong>in</strong>g chucks placed on each str<strong>and</strong>, str<strong>and</strong>s were stressed <strong>in</strong>dividuallyto a nom<strong>in</strong>al tension (3 kip) for stra<strong>in</strong>-gage <strong>in</strong>stallation. One row of str<strong>and</strong>s was <strong>in</strong>stalledat a time (Figure 3.41), with a pause to <strong>in</strong>stall the gages for that row before proceed<strong>in</strong>g tothe next. Stra<strong>in</strong>-gage <strong>in</strong>stallation procedures were discussed <strong>in</strong> detail <strong>in</strong> Section 3.5.2.After all str<strong>and</strong> rows <strong>and</strong> associated gages were <strong>in</strong>stalled, the prestress<strong>in</strong>g str<strong>and</strong>swere ready for full tension<strong>in</strong>g. A few hours before the beam was cast, str<strong>and</strong>s werestressed to approximately 203 ksi (31 kip per str<strong>and</strong>). First the rams were retractedslightly, lett<strong>in</strong>g off the <strong>in</strong>itial tension (used for gag<strong>in</strong>g) from the str<strong>and</strong>s. The rams werethen extended, push<strong>in</strong>g the stress<strong>in</strong>g-end bulkhead away from the prestress<strong>in</strong>g frame <strong>and</strong>stretch<strong>in</strong>g the str<strong>and</strong>s. S<strong>in</strong>ce the centroid of the prestress<strong>in</strong>g force did not correspond withthe bulkhead center (between ram supports), different hydraulic pumps were used for thetop <strong>and</strong> bottom sets of rams.137
