exceeded the AASHTO stress limit, compared to roughly 20% of those with 0.5-<strong>in</strong>.str<strong>and</strong> (5 of 23).It should be noted that two of these factors identified <strong>in</strong> this section to contributeto high maximum burst<strong>in</strong>g/spall<strong>in</strong>g stress, <strong>in</strong>adequate transverse re<strong>in</strong>forcement <strong>and</strong> largestr<strong>and</strong> diameter, were listed as causes of crack<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a recent survey of bridge design <strong>and</strong>construction professionals (Table 2.4).4.3.6 Evaluation of AASHTO LRFD & PCI Design EquationsThough the design equations for transverse end-region re<strong>in</strong>forcement <strong>in</strong>AASHTO LRFD <strong>and</strong> the PCI Design H<strong>and</strong>book were likely based on the same source(Marshall & Mattock, 1962), they have slightly different formulations. The equation <strong>in</strong>AASHTO LRFD sets the design transverse force proportional to prestress<strong>in</strong>g force, whilethat of PCI sets the design force proportional to the prestress<strong>in</strong>g force divided by theheight-to-transfer length ratio [ /⁄ ]. L<strong>in</strong>ear regression conducted on these twodesign models (Figure 4.25 <strong>and</strong> Figure 4.26) yielded similar correlation, <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g thatneither is significantly better for design purposes. Such a conclusion runs counter toviewpo<strong>in</strong>ts expressed by Tuan et al. (2004), <strong>and</strong> is adequate justification the cont<strong>in</strong>ueduse of the simpler AASHTO LRFD design equation.179
