Typical strain time histories for two gages—one reading low strains andanother high—are shown in Figure 4.1.Strain Increase after Transfer (με)10008006004002000slight increasein strain withtime for mostgagesStrain Increase (με)10005000 10 20 30Hours after Prestress Transfer0early, stablestrainreadingreported0 10 20 30Minutes after TransferFigure 4.1 Strain time histories for two gagesThe time-dependent increase in measured bursting/spalling strains observed forthis project is similar to a finding of Arthur and Ganguli (1965). In their experimentalstudy of concrete surface strains in end regions of pretensioned I-beams without webreinforcement (discussed in Section 2.4.1.5), tensile strains across cracks were observedto increase with time. Itani & Galbraith (1986), however, reported that foil strain gages,as used in Research Project 5831, are not reliable for long-term measurements(Section 2.4.2.3). Since the potential time-dependent strain rises could not be reliablyseparated from time-dependent instrumentation error, the stresses reported are thosebased on stable strain readings soon after prestress transfer. The use of such strainreadings also provides continuity with some past studies of bursting and spalling stressesin transverse reinforcement (Marshall & Mattock, 1962; Tuan et al., 2004).149
