Soon after <strong>the</strong> formation <strong>of</strong> NATO[in 1949], [<strong>the</strong> Gehlen organization] became <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial NATO intelligenceorganization.” It has been made public in recent years that <strong>the</strong> Gehlenorganization received an aggregate <strong>of</strong> $200 million in CIA fundsfrom Allen Dulles.Much <strong>of</strong> Gehlen’s intelligence proved questionable, although this wasnot known at <strong>the</strong> time, since <strong>the</strong> Rus sians had tight control over informationbehind <strong>the</strong> Iron Curtain. “Gehlen flooded <strong>the</strong> Americans with ‘au<strong>the</strong>ntic’documents provided by <strong>the</strong> Byeorus sians,” noted L<strong>of</strong>tus. “Because<strong>the</strong> information pertained to Soviet activity in areas where verificationwas impossible, <strong>the</strong> Americans had no choice but to view Gehlen’s informationas genuine. In reality, most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> secret intelligence that Gehlenfurnished came from recently arrived émigrés, Soviet newspapers, andmail from Belarus and <strong>the</strong> Ukraine.”Gehlen went on to an illustrious career in spy craft.
