Dean, former Nixon counsel, who was jailed for feloniescommitted at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> Watergate, referred to this new Republican conservatismin his 2007 book Broken Government: How Republican RuleDestroyed <strong>the</strong> Legislative, Executive and Judicial Branches: “It has beennew on Capitol Hill since about 1997, about three years after <strong>the</strong> GOPgained control <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> House; it has been new to <strong>the</strong> White House since2001, with <strong>the</strong> arrival <strong>of</strong> George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney, althoughits roots first emerged during <strong>the</strong> Nixon presidency and beganblossoming in <strong>the</strong> Reagan and Bush Senior [sic] years.” Although Deannever quite identifies <strong>the</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> this “new Republican way <strong>of</strong> thinking,”it is possible that it stemmed from <strong>the</strong> National Socialist philosophybrought into this country after World War II.BUT NOT ONLY <strong>the</strong> grandson <strong>of</strong> financier Prescott Bush, Nixon cronies,or <strong>the</strong> neoconservatives have shown sympathy for National Socialistideals.Arnold Schwarzenegger, <strong>the</strong> Austrian-born former bodybuilder turnedactor turned governor <strong>of</strong> California, has a background <strong>of</strong> pro-Nazi statementsand friends. In a 1977 interview, Schwarzenegger was asked whichperson he admired. His response: “I admire Hitler, for instance, becausehe came from being a little man with almost no formal education, up topower. I admire him for being such a good public speaker and for what hedid with it.”His admiration for Hitler may have come from sitting at his fa<strong>the</strong>r’sknee. In 1938, Hitler’s Nazis took control <strong>of</strong> Austria in an Anschluss, unifyingthat country with Germany. Arnold’s fa<strong>the</strong>r, Gustav, one year laterjoined Hitler’s infamous Sturmabteilung storm troopers (SA), known as<strong>the</strong> Brown Shirts. Gustav even sported a Hitler-like mustache.Schwarzenegger also caught flak because <strong>of</strong> his friendship with KurtWaldheim, former secretary general <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United Nations, who lost <strong>the</strong>presidency <strong>of</strong> Austria in 1992, after his Nazi past was revealed.
