More direct influence was realized bysupplying political funds to, or withdrawing support from, politiciansand po liti cal parties.”Funds for this financial control were channeled through <strong>the</strong> Bank <strong>of</strong>International Settlements that, according to <strong>the</strong> bank’s charter and with<strong>the</strong> agreement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> respective governments, was immune from seizure,closure, or censure, even if its owners were at war. <strong>The</strong>se owners included<strong>the</strong> Morgan- affiliated First National Bank <strong>of</strong> New York (among whosedirectors were Harold S. Vanderbilt and Wendell Wilkie), <strong>the</strong> Bank <strong>of</strong>En gland, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Reich</strong>sbank, <strong>the</strong> Bank <strong>of</strong> Italy, <strong>the</strong> Bank <strong>of</strong> France, and o<strong>the</strong>rcentral banks. “<strong>The</strong> bank [BIS] soon turned out to be . . . a money funnelfor American and British funds to flow into Hitler’s c<strong>of</strong>fers and to helpHitler build up his war machine,” wrote Higham. By <strong>the</strong> start <strong>of</strong> WorldWar II, <strong>the</strong> BIS was under Nazi control with <strong>the</strong> bank’s directors includingSchmitz, Schroeder, Dr. Walter Funk, and Emil Puhl <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Reich</strong>sbank.In 1939, when <strong>the</strong> Nazis moved into Czecho slovaki a, <strong>of</strong>ficials <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Czech National Bank removed $48 million in gold reserves to <strong>the</strong> Bank<strong>of</strong> En gland for safekeeping. Under pressure from <strong>the</strong> Nazis, Bank <strong>of</strong> Englandgovernor Montagu Norman unhesitatingly agreed to move <strong>the</strong> goldto Switzerland, where it went into Nazi accounts to purchase essential warmaterials for Germany.Despite <strong>the</strong> obvious rearmament in Germany in <strong>the</strong> late 1930s, <strong>the</strong>Nazis continued to find support in Britain, even within <strong>the</strong> RothschilddominatedBank <strong>of</strong> England. This pro-Nazi proclivity by Bank <strong>of</strong> En gland<strong>of</strong>ficials will assume even more relevance in <strong>the</strong> events described in <strong>the</strong>next section.Illustrating fur<strong>the</strong>r interconnecting business associations <strong>of</strong> this timewas International Telephone and Telegraph (ITT) German chairman GerhardtWestrick, a close associate <strong>of</strong> John Foster Dulles, who was a partnerto Dr. Heinrich Albert, head <strong>of</strong> Ford Motor Company in Germany until1945.
