Wild species are especially importantfor human beings as a treasure trove of resources for cultivating plants and breeding/reforming new types ofdomesticated animals. They are also the focus of international competitiveness which may restrict the futurebiotechnology industry.The first wild species germplasm resources preservation system covering plants, animals and microorganismswas established in China—Germplasm Bank of Wild Species in Southwest China. It preserves genetic materialsof seeds, plant germplasm in vitro, animal germplasm, microbial strain and DNA, as well as other germplasmresources repository, voucher specimens and germplasm resources information. It demonstrates the mostdiversified and comprehensive genetic materials preservation. They conducted researches on 102 standards andspecifications, and made breakthrough in terms of some key technology. Moreover, they fostered, attracted andretained a group of talents specialized in germplasm resources. They published 206 papers, including 86 papers injournals covered in SCI (including Trends in Plant Science) and 12 monographs. Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of SciencesAnnual Report(1) Established an internationally leadingwild species germplasm resources preservationsystem. This germplasm bank is currently one oftwo preservation facilities constructed in line withinternational preservation standards in the world. It isinternationally leading in respect of species collection,species identification, seed cleaning, storage andgermination test, culture in vitro and DNA libraryoperation. Its refrigeration and drying room is worldlevel.(2) Created and developed 3E principle forgermplasm resources collection and preservationpriority. Researchers systematically collectedand researched endangered species protected atthe national level, especially endemic speciesand germplasm resources with economic orscientific, ecological, cultural, religious values.They scientifically collected and preserved 156799accessions of 13148 species of wild speciesgermplasm resources in China (especially inSouthwest China, Tibet Plateau and Northwest AridArea), including 53344 accessions of 7471 species ofwild plant seeds.(3) Established and innovated the germplasmresources exchange and sharing system andtechnology. Researchers scientifically classifiedwild species germplasm resources and establishedthe mode of “graded sharing” through agreementor contract to achieve sharing of information andobjects.This research result was extensivelyinfluential and produced obvious social benefitsdomestically and overseas.
