Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of SciencesAnnual ReportGlobalised Forest-products: Commodification of the MatsutakeMushroom in Tibetan Villages,Yunnan, Southwest ChinaAward: First Prize of the 15th Scientific Results Show of Philosophy and Social Sciences of YunnanProvinceMain Investigator: HE JunMain Participant Unit: KIBResearch results:Under the international and globalized tradingof forest products, how to ensure the resourcesustainability and social fairness has been a greatchallenge for managers and decision-makers.Researches on forest products are normallyconcerned with ecological protection or economicvalues, while there is little focus on social andcultural features during utilization and protection. Onthe other hand, when studying forest management, socialists lack attention to ecology and economydue to their discipline background. Therefore, tocarry out interdisciplinary researches is significantfor theoretical construction and methodologicalinnovation as well as policy guidance. This research centers on the export of animportant forest product—Tricholoma matsutakein Yunnan. As the fresh T. matsutake industry isconfronted with excessive development, unsmoothmarket channels, uneven distribution and seriousexport problems, the researcher applied theinterdisciplinary method to comprehensively explainproblems existing in T. matsutake managementand trading of Yunnan Province, and discussedhow commercialization affected the ecologicalsustainability and socially economic sustainabilityof T. matsutake management from the perspectivesof institutional economics, cultural anthropologyand ethnoecology. The researcher also analyzed theT. matsutake market in Yunnan China, and exploredhow interest groups in the market and marketmechanism impacted the income of participantsin T. matsutake trading. It is found that the marketpolicy of encouraging export restricts the positivedevelopment of the market to some extent, and alsolimited market competition and participation, whichcaused some power groups to be key participants. Inaddition, as economic activities in local areas weresignificantly influenced by local culture, historyand politics, the interaction between localizationand globalization posed threat to the equality of thedistribution mechanism of T. matsutake commoditychain. This paper shows the high level of academicinnovation, providing a new method, a new theoryand a new viewpoint for future researches. It alsogives important information and feasible opinionsfor managers and decision-makers in practice, whichmay create excellent social, economic and ecologicalbenefit.—— ACHIEVEMENTS AND AWARDS ——
