Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of SciencesAnnual ReportResearch results:The discovery of antibiotics marks the milestone of the medical history of human beings and embodiesrevolutionary significance. However, as antibiotic medicines are widely and even unreasonably applied, the drugresistance problem of pathogenic microorganism worsens. Currently, methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) infected persons keep at a high level and seriously threatens human life, which has been a significantproblem to be solved urgently in the global medical field. Therefore, it is urgent to develop anti-MRSA medicinesfrom different perspectives. Natural plant products are important sources of the lead compound of medicines, which can make up for deficiencies in anti-MRSA medicines. Under the support of national, military and Yunnanfunds, this project achieves following innovative attainments after researches for more than 20 years:1. Researchers created technical platforms foranti-MRSA Chinese medicines produced in CentralYunnan in the subtropical zone, and screened 996types of traditional Chinese medicines, from whichthey differentiated, identified and first discoveredmore than 10 compounds directly suppressingMRSA and other pathogens, and also discoveredthat the synergetic enhancement and even reversionhave an anti-MRSA effect on MRSA-immunityantibacterial drug. They completed preclinicalpharmacodynamics study on anti-MRSA activityof 10 new anti-MRSA drugs. Doctor HildebertWagner, Editor-in-Chief of Phytomedicine (worldfamousvegetable drug magazine) commented:"Synergy research: Approaching a new generation ofphytopharmaceuticals".2. They first discovered that Hypericumjaponicum, Caesalpinia sappan, Morus alba,Corydalis saxicola, Chelidonium majus, Saxifragamelanocentra, and Rhodiola kirilowii have anti-MRSA and anti-HBV/HCV functions as well asantibacterial function with antibiotics. They alsocompleted preclinical pharmacodynamics study onanti-HBV/HCV activity of 7 new anti-HBV/HCVdrugs.3. They first discovered that Chelidonium majusand Evodia rutaecarpa are able to resist Candidaalbicans, Magnaporthe oryzae, other fungus andpowdery mildew. They also completed preclinicalpharmacodynamics study on anti-fungus activity of2 new anti-candida albicans and anti-magnaportheoryzae drugs.4. They screened 4516 types of anti-MRSA/HBV/HCV activity compounds submitted by morethan 50 domestic institutions. It has been the clinicalbase for the development of natural anti-MRSA/HBV/HCV/HIV vegetable drugs at home.Researchers of this project published morethan 70 papers in domestic and overseas journalssuch as Phytomedicine, J Ethnopharmacol, PlantaMedica, Antivir Res, J Virol, Eur J Pharmacoland Molecules, including 32 papers in journalscovered by SCI. Some research results have beenrecognized by international industry experts. This —— ACHIEVEMENTS AND AWARDS ——
Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of SciencesAnnual Reportproject produced 13 national invention patents andfostered a number of professional talents. Researchresults have been applied by more than 30 militaryor non-military institutions. Researchers clinicallydifferentiated, screened and identified more than20000 pieces and obtained the gains of RMB 46million, creating excellent economic and socialbenefit. This project made breakthrough in therelated field and overally achieved the internationallyadvanced level. Some research results have beenglobally leading, promoting the scientific progressin this field.
