When she done dat I run an' hid beh<strong>in</strong>' Mis' Fanny's chair kaze I done seed Mis'Virg<strong>in</strong>ia set her mouf befo' an' I knowed she meant biznes'.I didn' have sense enough to be skeered den kaze I hadn' never seed no Yankee sojers, but 'twaren't long befo'I wuz skeered. De Yankees come one morn<strong>in</strong>', an' dey ripped, Oh, Lawd, how dey did rip. When dey rode upto de gate an' come stomp<strong>in</strong>' to de house, Mis' Fanny 'gun to cry. 'Tell dem someth<strong>in</strong>', Sister, tell demsometh<strong>in</strong>'; she tole Mis' Virg<strong>in</strong>ia.Mis' Virg<strong>in</strong>ia she a<strong>in</strong>' done no cry<strong>in</strong>'. When she seed dem Yankees com<strong>in</strong>' 'cross de hill, she run 'roun' an' gotall de jewelry. She took <strong>of</strong>f de r<strong>in</strong>gs an' p<strong>in</strong>s she an' Mis' Fanny had on an' she got all de th<strong>in</strong>gs out <strong>of</strong> dejewelry box an' give dem to pappy. "Hide dem, Lillmam" she tole pappy, 'hide dem some place whare demthieves won't f<strong>in</strong>d dem'.
