Huge numbers for Salvos’ Red Shield AppealThis year 136 KWS students volunteered theirtime to hit the streets of Orange and doorknockfor the Salvation Army’s 2013 Red ShieldAppeal.In fact, KWS volunteers made up almost half thetotal number of students involved in the Orangedoorknock and accounted for an amazing$20,000 in collections.The massive commitment by our students alsoensured KWS retained the Salvo’s SchoolsChallenge Shield, which is awarded to the localschool with the largest number of volunteers.All up the Orange volunteers collected a record$58,957 from some very generous local citizens.A big pat on the back to all the students whogave up their time to support this very worthycause.Food and hospitality excursions’ international flavourThe KWS Hospitality program is wellknown for its suberbly resourcedkitchen facilities, but our FoodTechnology and Hospitality studentsalso enjoy fantastic opportunitiesaway from School.A trip to Sydney’s ‘Little Italy’ earlierthis year saw our Year 9 and 10Food Technology students immersethemselves in Italian cuisine andculture.The students were exploring theinfluence of Italian migration on oureating habits, so naturally headedto the inner-western suburb ofHaberfield, long regarded as thecity’s ‘Little Italy’.Hands-on activities included aculinary treasure hunt for Year 9s,while the Year 10 students filmed ashort movie showcasing aspects ofauthentic Italian cuisine on offer.Meanwhile our Year 12 Hospitalitystudents went upmarket, visiting theinternationally acclaimed EmiratesWolgan Valley Resort and Spa.The students spent three hoursbehind the scenes at the luxurydestination, learning just what ittakes to be Australia’s only resort toachieve international Carbon Zerostatus.KWS is lucky to have a greatrelationship with the resort, havingvisited four years in a row and alsohaving a student, Jordan Brodie,experience a week-long industryplacement at Wolgan Valley last year.11
